National Free School Meal Voucher Scheme Guidance

How it works

The government have developed a national scheme to provide supermarket vouchers for parents / carers of pupils who are eligible for free school meals.

Parents / Carers will receive a redemption eCode directly to the email address they have registered with livekitchen (unless you provided school with an alternative email). You will receive instructions on how to use this eCode to create an eGift card which can then be used in the following supermarkets:

  • Morrisons
  • Tesco
  • Sainsbury’s
  • Asda
  • Waitrose
  • M&S

Once you have received your voucher,  you will be able to redeem it by either:

  • presenting the voucher on a smartphone or tablet
  • presenting a paper copy of the voucher

Families are free to select the most appropriate food and drink for their child, but the vouchers can not be redeemed for any age-restricted items, such as alcohol, cigarettes or lottery tickets.

Eligibility

The national voucher system is only available for children who receive a means-funded free school meal. It is not available for children who receive a universal free school meal (children in F2 - Y2 who automatically receive a free school meal, and their parents have not applied for a free school meal). If you think you might be eligible for free school meals, you can still apply. If your application is successful, you will be able to receive the £15 voucher once school has been notified by Rotherham Council that you have been awarded free school meals.

Your child may be able to get free school meals if you get any of the following:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • The guaranteed element of Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
  • Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
  • Universal Credit - if you apply on or after 1 April 2018 your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)

You can apply for free school meals at https://www.rotherham.gov.uk/benefits/apply-free-school-meals/1
