Phonics Home Learning

In school, your child will practise the pure sounds and special friends sounds every day. 

It is important that the sounds you practise at home are 'pure' and are pronounced correctly. A video showing the pure sounds can be accessed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkXcabDUg7Q&t=1s 

 

If your child is accessing Set 1 sounds group...

  • Say the sounds on the photocopy sheet.
  • Practise the writing rhyme for the sound.
  • Fred talk the words and ask your child to repeat and say the word.
  • Play Fred games to practise oral blending.

If your child is accessing 'Photocopy Ditties'

  • Practise the sounds at the top of the page.
  • Read the words with your child until they can 'Speedy read' these words. 
  • Read, read and re-read the page of text until your child can read this independently and quickly without 'fredding' every word. 
  • Play a Fred game. (see above)

If your child is accessing Red group

  • Practise the sounds at the beginning of the book as partners - circles first, in order and then out of order speedily. Check for accurate sounds.
  • Practise the 'story green' and 'speedy green' words until they can read these speedily.
  • Red words - not to be sounded out. How speedy can your child read these words?
  • Read the story.
  • Read, read and re-read the story until your child can read this independently and quickly without 'fredding' every word. 
  • Play a Fred game. (see above)

If your child is accessing Green group

  • Practise the sounds at the beginning of the book as partners - circles first, in order and then out of order speedily. Check for accurate sounds.
  • Practise the 'story green' and 'speedy green' words until they can read these speedily.
  • Red words - not to be sounded out. How speedy can your child read these words?
  • Read the story.
  • Read, read and re-read the story until your child can read this independently and quickly without 'fredding' every word. 
  • Play a Fred game. (see above)

If your child is accessing Purple group

  • Practise the sounds at the beginning of the book as partners - circles first, in order and then out of order speedily. Check for accurate sounds.
  • Practise the 'story green' and 'speedy green' words until they can read these speedily.
  • Red words - not to be sounded out. How speedy can your child read these words?
  • Read the story.
  • Read, read and re-read the story until your child can read this independently and quickly without 'fredding' every word. 
  • Play a Fred game. (see above)
  • Your child should be more confident in 'Fred in your head' at this stage. 

If your child is accessing Pink or Orange group

  • Practise the sounds at the beginning of the book as partners - circles first, in order and then out of order speedily. Check for accurate sounds. Set 2 special friends will begin to appear in your child's book. 
  • Practise the 'story green' and 'speedy green' words until they can read these speedily.
  • Red words - not to be sounded out. How speedy can your child read these words?
  • Read the story.
  • Read, read and re-read the story until your child can read this independently and quickly with 'Fred in your head' and then speedily. Check your child has not just memorised the story by getting them to track the words as they go.
  • Read and answer the questions for comprehension at the back of the book. 
  • Play a Fred game. (see above)

If your child is accessing Yellow or Blue group

  • Practise the sounds at the beginning of the book as partners - circles first, in order and then out of order speedily. Check for accurate sounds. Set 2 special friends will begin to appear in your child's book. 
  • Practise the 'story green' and 'speedy green' words until they can read these speedily.
  • Red words - not to be sounded out. How speedy can your child read these words?
  • Read the story.
  • Read, read and re-read the story until your child can read this independently and quickly with 'Fred in your head' and then speedily. Check your child has not just memorised the story by getting them to track the words as they go.
  • Build up stamina for reading, fluency and accuracy at this stage.
  • Read and answer the questions for comprehension at the back of the book. 
  • Play a Fred game. (see above)
